Right you are! 广  yǎn ‘shelter’ is used as the radical or a kind of the ‘construction material’ for compound characters, such as  应   yīng ‘answer’, 店   diàn ‘shop’ , 度   dù ‘degree’, 鹰   yīng ‘eagle’ and many others.

Separately  广 ‘guǎng’ is used as the Chinese character with the meanings of ‘wide, broad’ in such words as 广义  guǎngyì  ‘broad sense’, 广播  guǎngbō   ‘broadcast’, 广洲  guǎngzhōu ‘Guangzhou city’ etc.
